In contrast to other books by John Green this book in my opinion focuses more on its main character (and especially her inner "monologue") and less on the complexity of the story. Which in a way is something that the main character is accused of herself. If you look for a "Paper Towns"-style adventure(coming of age, love, roadtrip) novel, or the amazing rollercoaster of feelings you get from TFIOS, this isn't necessarily the book for you.On the other hand, if you know anything about the role that mental illness has played/plays in the authors life, or can in the slightest relate to the struggle (I lack a better word here) you should definitely read it! And even if you don't maybe you can take away a thing or two.Be warned: this book is borderline unbearable to read at times, and you might find yourself deeply (and I mean deeply) disturbed by the episodes which portray Aza's inner fight, much in the same way that Shostakovichs 2nd Cello Concerto does. And though this might not be a book I'm gong read more than two or three times (and normally I reread books a lot), I do wholeheartedly recommend it.Just read it with an open mind, and try not to project your expectations from other Green books on this one.
Finally a new book by John Green! The characters and the plot are typically Green, but for me, it didn't work out as well as The Fault in Our Stars or Looking for Alaska did.Aza Holmes is a teenage girl with huge mental issues (partly due to her father's death), a quirky best friend and a car named Harold. The story is mainly about her trying to cope with her illness and her "young love" with billionaire's son Davis Pickett whose father just vanished without any trace. There is a little detective story, a litte bit of romance, a little bit of coming of age-plot - but it's not getting together in a way that touches me. Aza doesn't progress, some plotlines are easily predictable and I am kind of sick of all the quirkiness of the characters. It's still a nice book to read, but it won't have a place in my heart as Looking for Alaska has.
I used to be mad at John Green for taking this long to publish something new, but now I am so glad he did. This book is so carefully and so fragilely written it leaves you speechless. I myself am not struggling with mental illness but know many people who do and also have worked with mentally ill people professionally. But only after reading Turtles I began to grasp what those affected really have to deal with. This book is both an immensely difficult but also very enjoyable and diverting read. This is the author's great talent - he manages to deal with difficult and delicate topics, is able to present them authentically and still writes beautiful uplifting coming of age stories. I feel with this book he has reached his peak. It takes you inside the mind of a young deeply troubled but also kind and beautiful woman and you will fall in love with her and she will break your heart, when she is in pain. After reading you will see the world with different eyes. I also listened to the audio book narrated by Kate Rudd and can only recommend it. It got me on all emotional levels - I laughed, I was euphoric, scared and cried tears of both sadness and happiness. Please, do yourself a favor and read this book. You will definitely not regret it.
This book ultimately it leaves you hopeful in a way that's very fitting- not too optimistic, but also it doesn't put you through what it did without picking you back up, in John Green's typical style of doing so.Aza's OCD isn't romanticized in any way, her thought spirals, obsessions and compulsions always appear in the least expected moments, just like mental illness does in real life, and her anxiety isn't gone by the end, or eradicated by The Power of Love, which is another thing I appreciated a lot, because it happens too often in YA with mentally ill main characters.I don't know how to finish other than - *please* read this book.
"Turtles All The Way Down" war da keine Ausnahme. Vor allem der Absatz, in dem es heißt “The problem with happy endings is that they're either not really happy, or not really endings, you know? In real life, some things get better and some things get worse. All The Way Down" wieder einmal geschafft!
